 Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) Citation

AFI 36-2803

Key Points to Writing
  • PCS/PCA Decorations will be based on EPRs/OPRs
  • Achievement Decorations read like awards, and will need a narrative for justification
  • DO NOT plan on making up mid-tour points in a PCS medal
  • Ask for HELP, the only person looking out for #1 is you
  • The only person looking out for your Airman is YOU!
  • ASK for/WRITE a Mid Tour decoration
  • WRITE!!! The more you do it, the better you get
  • Use F7 to spell check. Errors reflect badly on you and your subordinate!

The following Example has been taken from a Word Doc.  I have changed mission information to protect myself and the people I have received the information from.  I will attempt to give a little insight to the entire process if I know it.

CITATION

TO ALL WHO SHALL SEE THESE PRESENTS, GREETINGS:
THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA AUTHORIZED BY EXECUTIVE ORDER, 16 JANUARY 1969 HAS
AWARDED
THE MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL
(FIFTH OAK LEAF CLUSTER)

TO

CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT <FNAME> <MI> <LNAME>

FOR

MERITORIOUS SERVICE
20 JANUARY 199? TO 31 JANUARY 200?

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Chief Master Sergeant <FNAME> <MI> <LNAME> distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as Squadron Superintendent, ###th Intelligence Squadron, Air Combat Command, <BASE> Air Force Base California. During this period, Chief <LNAME>’s superb leadership and vast experience were critical in transforming the one billion dollar Distributed Ground Station-??? into a combat proven weapon system. Under his tutelage, the ground station maintained a 99 percent mission ready rate, even with continuous operational missions and numerous major subsystem upgrades. He led Distributed Ground Station-???’s logistic sustainment actions to support over 1,000 missions over Kosovo, Bosnia, and the Balkans for Operations ALLIED FORCE and JOINT ENDEAVOR. The intelligence provided to warfighters during this period earned the unit joint credit for the destruction of 28 enemy aircraft and 39 radar surface-to-air missile sites. During Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Chief <LNAME> directed the efforts to deploy and sustain the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle for its first-ever operational deployment. Combined with the U-2, these platforms executed 411 sorties and fulfilled over 43,000 imagery, target and battle damage assessment requests. His triumphal leadership highlighted Deployable Ground Station-??? as a true force multiplier and integral part of the Air Force ‘kill chain.’ The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Chief <LNAME> culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
