Below-The-Zone (BTZ) Board Findings/Considerations

The information below was submitted to the site as it follows a theory that many people know and expect regarding the problems with BTZ packages.  Although the information below is an example from just one base, it follows the same problems seen across the Air Force, from Andrews to Wright-Pat.  Information in Italics was added information.

  1. There were a few inconsistencies between the number of lines specified in the BTZ guidelines and what was actually in the 1206s. In some cases there were too few lines and in other cases there were too many. The 1206 will have a maximum of 15 (thus keep the packages at 15) lines excluding headers. In the future packages will not be accepted if they exceed the 15 line limit.
     

  2. The board members were surprised that most of the packages lacked key Airmen leadership. They expect to see Airmen involved in professional and private organizations such as base Honor Guard, dorm council, Airman advisory, Air Force Sergeants Association, etc and other key roles outside their squadrons.
     

  3. Some bullets lacked specific details when referencing education. Don’t let the board guess how the member received/completed semester hours. If a member CLEP’d a class, then state so or specify any other detailed method of completing college level credits.
     

  4. Start preparing Airmen and their packages early for the board. Encourage them get out to and participate in various projects so that senior leadership will see them in action. Additionally, the board was impressed with several bullets highlighting Airmen training NCOs or filling NCO positions/responsibilities. Strong leadership bullets resulted in higher package scores.
     

  5. Several units missed the due date for packages and this has occurred over the last several boards. Starting next board, BTZ packages that are turned in late to the Promotions Office will require approval to meet the board.
